Norma Hubbard, an author and storyteller. Norma is a Southern writer and storyteller who was born, reared, and educated in New Orleans, in both Catholic and public schools. Upon graduating from high school, she attended a finishing school for single young women. She came to live in Panama City, in 1967, and lives in a hundred-year-old-house.
Norma is the author of two novels: The Archbishop’s Daughter and the Haunting of Willow Wynne, and is the creator of an audio cassette called, “Once Upon A Time in the Sixteenth Century in St. Andrew, Florida. “ She will bring copies of her novels for those who might be interested.
Norma performs a one-woman act, and her repertoire includes storytelling. For the Friends meeting, she is telling the story of “The Life of Andrew and Rachel Jackson.” She also tells of children who fought in the American Revolutionary War. In this particular story, she tells of 10-year-old Andrew Jackson fighting in the Revolutionary War.
Norma performs these and other presentations for schools, libraries, and clubs. You will enjoy Norma as she tells her stories. Be sure to come to Friends meeting on October 2nd and hear some of what she provides. She has many, many other stories to share; such as: Mary Ball Washington – George’s Mother, The poet, Emily Dickenson, The warrior, Osceola, The love story of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens, which began on the Mayflower, and Fabulous New Orleans in the 1700’s.

The American Red Cross will be in the foyer of the Chipley branch on Monday, October 6th, answering questions about provided volunteer opportunities and services. Make sure you are prepared if disaster comes your way!
The BookPage provided by the Friends of the Library has continued to be popular. Copies can be found on the front circulation desk at the beginning of each month. BookPage’s goal is to recommend the best books for readers of all types, whether you' are interested in literary fiction or romance, history, or science fiction, cookbooks, or children's books. The magazine focuses on new releases and tailor reviews for the general reader—the true booklover is always on the lookout for the next great read.
Check out the library’s new display, #1s, in the adult section. These books are the first in series that you might have missed. Find an exciting new author and series today!
Sunny Hills Branch
Award-winning author, Anthony Doerr's All The Light We Cannot See, is a beautifully written book to live in for a while. New for dystopia fans is Alexander Gordo Smith's Escape From Furnace Series. You will find it in the Juvenile section, but young adults will like it too.
There was a great turn out for the two weeks before school started –Movie Day. Movie Day will start-up again in October. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the book sale. It was a great success. Some of the new books on display are: The Queen of the Tearling, by Erika Johansen, The lost Island, by Douglas Preston, and Bull River, by Robert Knott. Do not forget to visit our website to see all the online resources for free. The library and the patrons would like to thank WCBOCC and the City of Vernon for all that was done to keep the library open.
At Wausau Branch, there is The Encyclopedia of Immaturity, for kids of all ages. Percy Jackson's Greek Gods is a gorgeous mythology book by Rick Riordan with fantastic illustrations by John Rocco. In the collections, are good new Adult fiction titles like Chris Bohjalian's Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands, and Tom Bouman's mystery, Dry Bones in the Valley.

Washington County Public Library and the Washington County Sheriff’s Explorers have partnered this year. Bringing awareness to the children of the area, stresses that we are all good guys.
Explorers will be reading stories for children between the hours of 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday
Spread the word, and give your support!

Thank you so much for the productive meeting on September 3. It was a joy seeing each of you after our three month summer break.
One item of business that was discussed was the possibility of moving two of our meetings, one to the Sunny Hills Library and another to the municipal building in Vernon. We want to be a civic group that includes members of all the communities in our county. We will have further discussion of this issue at the Oct. 2 meeting. Be considering how we can invite citizens of those communities to join us in our endeavors to provide support for all branches of the Washington County Library.
We will also be volunteering to help with the book sale scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11. Check your calendars and come prepared to sign up for a specific time to work.
The Board will meet Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4:00 at the library.
Remember to place your lunch order by Monday, Sept. 29 with Joyce Odom at 638-1736.

· Chicken Salad on Croissant-All white meat chicken combined with onion, celery, mayonnaise and lemon juice, served on an airy croissant.
· Piggy Potato
· Cobb Salad-Crisp lettuce, boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, diced chicken breast, sugar snap peas and crumbled bacon, served with ranch dressing.
· Club Wrap-Diced bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion and thinly sliced turkey, wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla.

Writers who need support for their work, either through peer critiques, workshops or classes, or just encouragement, may wish to attend. Meetings are the first Thursday at 2:00 p.m |

Washington County Public Library will receive additional money from both the State of Florida and Washington County.
This will allow us to hire more staff to help provide quality service to patrons and to extend hours at two branch locations. Please thank your County Commissioners when you see them for recognizing the needs of the Library.
During Chipley Homecoming, the Library will be participating in a fundraiser with Pizza Hut. In the newsletter, you will find a voucher code. When you purchase anything from Pizza Hut (dine in, delivery, or carryout) on October 10th, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Library. Additional vouchers will be available at all library locations.
Finally, previously, I mentioned the Library will be doing a community needs assessment of services. I will be passing out a five-question survey at the Friends’ Luncheon for you to fill out.
It does not take more than a few minutes to fill out but the impact of your response will determine library services for the next few years.
