September 2013 Newsletter

Friends of the Washington County Public Library

 from 12:00-1:00pm,
at the Blue Lake Community Center.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and Bring a Friend!

Welcome Richard “Gus” Gustafson!

Experiencing The Adventure,  was written from my day-to-day diary, enhanced from my memory of the past twenty-four years or more of working with the wild animals. I was fortunate to be in on the ground floor of working at roam-free parks. I was the first American hired to work for Lion Country Safari, and the third Chief Game Warden. I went from park to park as Lion Country built new ones in Florida, Georgia, and California, training the men to become wardens, forming prides of lions, building hoof stock sections, and more.
I was also fortunate enough to go to Japan, then on to Korea as a Zoo Advisor, and then back to the park in Japan.
I hope that all that was learned through the trials and errors will be educational for the general public, help for other  wardens, and most of all that it will contribute to making life better for all wild animals.
Branching Out

Wausau Branch

Has had a busy summer with lots of kids and adults reading books, using computers, and loving the wireless!

Popular YA reads have been DEATH NOTE: Another Note,  and  The Raven Boys.  Another Note is a companion novel to the Death Note manga series. The Raven Boys, on the latest paranormal novels, has a sequel out next month. New for older kids is Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, by James L. Swanson. It’s a fast paced thriller based on well-researched letters, documents, and interviews.

September is Library Card   Sign-up Month

Library Card Sign-up Month is a time to remind parents, children, and students of all ages that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Director Flies the Coop! At the end of June,

Linda Norton retired as the
Director of
the Library.
Linda was director for 22 years.
She was presented with a certificate of parasailing by her staff ~ who knew she was ready to ‘fly free’!
Library staff has a list of volunteer work she can do for when she gets bored!

Here we go again!

The library’s biggest moneymaker is selling books! This is a perfect opportunity!
Last year, Lucinda and the staff worked Friday and Saturday.  This year, it was suggested th ebook sale be held on Thursday and Friday.
With the library being short staffed, staff would be grateful for teams to get together and  cover shifts on the  12th and 13th of  September. Two-or-three hour shifts seem to work the best.
There will be a sign-up sheet at the Friends Meeting.

It Is Official!
 As of July 25,2013
Renae Rountree
is the new Director
for the
Washington County Public Library!
 Congratulations!

Friends, we’ve had a little break for the summer and it’s almost time to start concentrating on ways that we can aid the library.  This past year, we have provided a sign that is almost complete.  If you haven’t been by lately, you can see bricks around the base of the sign.  They need cleaning up but they are there.  We appreciate David Corbin and the County Operations Center for all the help they have given the library.
Linda Norton, County Librarian, has retired. She really wanted a sign and she is the force behind the Friends desire to help.  It is good to drive by and see messages to the community about what is happening at the library.  When we celebrated the 10th year anniversary of the library building, we also celebrated the work that Linda has done to make it what it is today.
As we come to the end of a biennium in January, 2014, new officers and board members will be in place.  We elect these in November and install them in January.  Be thinking about the new biennium as what you would like to see happen.  Be prepared to take a position if you are asked to serve.  We need good leaders with fresh ideas and a desire to make a difference with our library.
Cynthia Johnson and Catherine Nelson took the responsibility of trying to find a caterer for our meals.  They have worked throughout the summer to interview possible candidates and examined proposals.  They recommended Mad Housewife Productions, prepared by Tara Sanders.  This is a boxed catering service for up to 70 persons on the lst Thursday of each month.  Dropoff service will be to the Blue Lake Community Center in Chipley and will occur 20 minutes prior to the scheduled meeting time.  Prices are fixed at $7.50 per boxed lunch.  Each boxed lunch will include one lunch entrée, one side dish, one dessert, a beverage, napkin and necessary utensils.
A menu selection form will be provided to the contact representative of the Washington County Friends of the Library ten days prior to the meeting.  Each month’s menu selection form will contain four lunch entrée options and four beverage options.  The Mad Housewife will collect the menu selection form two days prior to
meeting.
As the time gets closer, we will provide more information.  We will go with Cynthia and Catherine’s recommendation initially but will need to get the Board and Membership’s approval at first meetings.  Let’s see what the Mad Housewife has to offer!  It sounds good and well planned.  Thank you, Tara, for presenting us with this proposal.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the September 5th Luncheon Meeting (12 noon) at the Lake and the Board at our meeting on Thursday, August 29th,  4:00 P.M.  at the Library.
