Welcomes Alisa James to their monthly meeting Thursday,
November 1st, 2012, from 12:00-1:00pm, at the
Blue Lake Community Center.
Everyone is encouraged to attend!
Air
Force Reservist Col. Alisa James is hardly your typical Air Force colonel. A
practicing attorney in Panama City, the tall 55 year-old can as easily blend
with the attorney crowd at the courthouse as she can with the military in some
of the most dangerous places an American service member can be deployed.
James
was sent overseas as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, also known
as JAG or JAG Corps, which refers to the legal branch or specialty of the U. S.
Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Navy. She was sent to Afghanistan to train
"judges and cops" in procedures like forensics.
Col.
Alisa James is in the process of writing her first
book about her experiences.
THIS month by calling Renae
Rountree, at 638-1314 by noon, on Monday, October 29, 2012.
The cost of the meal is $7.00.
Be ready to let her know which number
sandwich and drink you would like. If you cannot find your menu, please contact
a Friend.
The meal is being catered again by
Boar-Deli, and includes a six-inch sub, chips, pickle, drink, and dessert.
President’s Message
November is the month that we
give thanks in many ways and I have lots of Friends that I need to thank. Here is a partial list:
Roberta Lampe, a Friend, has been
very ill for a couple of months in intensive care. She is to get out of the hospital on
Thursday, October18th, her husband reported to me. I have missed her in our meetings and called
to tell her how we had missed her only to find out how sick she was. She is really a beautiful person, inside and
out. I can’t wait until we see her back
at Friends meetings.
Our Book Sale was a success. We didn’t make as much as in the past, $450,
but, that will be a big help to the Library.
Thanks to all who made it successful.
Everyone who participated contributed so much, not only to help with the
sales, but with greeting and talking to the folks who came by. It was truly rewarding and amazing to see
what books the folks were interested in.
Not your usual “bestsellers” for the most part. A special thanks goes to a good friend, Susan
Roberts, who worked many hours to make the library look attractive and
clean. Another good friend, Jeanne
Lavender, put the paperback mystery books in alphabetical order. I heard good
comments about that.
We have funds to purchase the
library sign and Linda has the paperwork in the works to make it all
happen. Hopefully, there is no big
holdup anywhere and we will see the sign up soon.
I was deeply touched when a
Friend, who was helping with the Book Sale, asked, “Do you have a secretary
yet?” I said, “No.” And, she said, “I’ll
do it.” That person is Leola Porter, who
has been secretary before. I’m so
grateful for her offer. Thanks a
million, Leola!
And, one last thing, Merle Jones
has agreed to be in charge of “Game Night” with everyone’s help she says. It does take all of us and I appreciate all
the work the Friends do to make our library better.
Pat Graham would like her book back that was
borrowed. Please drop it off at any branch.
Tai Chi for Health
Class, 8 a.m., each Tuesday @ Your Library in Chipley. Classes
are free and open to the public. People of all ages
find tai chi to be a gentle, effective way to recharge and relax. Whether you
are in your first decade of life or your tenth, you will derive benefits from
practicing Tai Chi. The effects of Tai
Chi are well studied, particularly in the population of people over 60 years
old. The cardio-respiratory benefits of tai chi revealed by studies in China
include improved resting blood pressure, improved oxygen capacity, and improved
overall capacity of the cardiovascular system as demonstrated during exercise
testing. Research has also demonstrated that Tai Chi practice improves
strength, balance, and bone density.
This
November break away from traditional Thanksgiving meals with one of our
cookbooks filled with recipes designed to tease your tastebuds!
Enjoy
an evening of delightful music on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 6pm in the
meeting room of the Chipley Library. Matthew Gurnsey, The Kilted Man, will present a one hour performance. Through the
marriage of wit and finesse, Gurnsey charms his audiences, sweeping them into
tales of wayward voyages, unrequited love and the vibrantly colorful lives of
many Irish tales.
His unique talents with traditional Celtic
instruments such as the concertina, bodhran, bones and mandolin, add an air of
authenticity to each piece and his stirringly rich bass voice provides the
foundation for the hauntingly beautiful melodies.
