About our Organization

The purpose of the Friends organization is to provide support for the Washington County Public Library by providing materials and equipment, which would otherwise be unavailable, assisting the library staff in its programs, and making our citizens aware of the important role the public library plays in our community.

November 2014

Friends of the Washington County Public Library
will meet...

Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 12:00-1:00 p.m.  In the Ag Center.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and Bring a Friend!

Our November speaker for Friends of the Library will be Diane Phillips McKeithen, a Bay County native and wife of Frank McKeithen, sheriff of Bay County. She is a retired school teacher who has written her first novel, In An Instant. The book is classified as a young adult novel but the  majority of readers have been adults.

The novel centers around  eight teenagers in the small town of Lake View where everyone in the community, as well as world wide, ages 16 and older, die. These teenagers must take responsibility for the surviving Lake View children. The lives, loves, and struggles of these eight teens are intricately weaved as they face their future. We hope you will come join our group, enjoy a bag lunch, and listen to an interesting book review.

Books will be available to purchase if you are interested.

Movie day November  18, and  December 16, at 3:30 pm

Sunny Hills Branch

We have a book for everyone at Sunny Hills Branch Library.  Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening is so much more than the title implies.  Carol Wall has written a lovely, insightful memoir of her relationship with a wonderful gardener and a complex and inspiring man. There are two new cat mysteries for cat lovers who like a good whodoneit.  Patricia Fry's Cat-Eye Witness and Karen Anne Golden's The Cats that Chased the Storm. are fast-paced and fun.

Wausau Branch

The Fever is Megan Abbott's story of a strange illness that starts to spread in a high school among the girls, puzzling the health professionals and frightening parents. Both the hysteria and the secrets revealed are thought provoking.  This is an interesting peek into the thought processes of teenage girls:  New at Wausau Library.

Thanksgiving provides us an opportunity to reflect on life and appreciate what we have been given. This fall, I find myself especially thankful for the Library staff. Their commitment to their jobs and their love of the library makes it possible for us to provide great service to our patrons. They work hard and make  miracles happen when there is little money or not enough time to get everything done in a day. It is only when things don’t run as smoothly (like not many new books on the shelf or a closed sign on a library door) that you realize the integral part each person plays within the system. The ability to step up and continue to handle issues when someone is out sick or has an emergency  is not something that  everyone possesses. Washington County Public Library is blessed with a staff that possesses these qualities.  Please, when you see members of the library staff this month, express your gratitude for the work that they do and let them know that they are appreciated!

Each month, a friendly bunch of writers, readers, and storytellers take

it upon themselves to share a wealth of creativity.

Writers who need support for their work, either through peer critiques

workshops or classes, or just encouragement, may wish to attend.

Meetings are the first Thursday at 2:00 p.m

Dear friends,
I know everyone is  enjoying the much cooler weather that has finally come our way.  In this part of the country,  fall is a welcome reward for having survived the      summer.  Before we turn around, however, Thanksgiving and Christmas will be upon us.

Please note that our Board meeting has been changed to Wednesday, October  29, at 4:00 p.m., at the library.
The regular November meeting will be Nov. 6, noon, at the Ag Center. Please invite a friend and don't forget to place your lunch order by Monday, November 3.

Susan Roberts has been doing an outstanding job of booking various speakers for our meetings. Let's make sure we show our appreciation for her hard work.  Thanks, Susan.

We are continuing with our efforts to establish Friends of the Library groups in Sunny Hills, Vernon, and Wausau.

I want to emphasize, however, that The Friends of the Library    supports not only the Chipley branch, but also the branches in Sunny Hills and Vernon.  If you know of folks in those communities who would like to get involved with our efforts, please invite them to attend one of our meetings.  We would love for them to join us in our support of the Washington County Libraries.

Sarah Franklin has graciously agreed to chair the Game Night activity.  Please help Sarah as much as you can, as this fund-raiser requires much planning and attention to detail.  Last year's event was a success!

I am looking forward to meeting with the board on Oct. 29, and to seeing each of you on Nov. 6.

Regards,
Pat Dickson
President Friends of the Library
