About our Organization

The purpose of the Friends organization is to provide support for the Washington County Public Library by providing materials and equipment, which would otherwise be unavailable, assisting the library staff in its programs, and making our citizens aware of the important role the public library plays in our community.

March Newsletter

Friends of the Library will have their meeting on Thursday, March 3rd from 12:00-1:00pm at the Blue Lake Community Center.

 Everyone is invited to attend!
Ruth McCrary, Friends member and educator, will review Swedish author, Steig Larsson’s trilogy, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.  She will give some interesting tidbits of his life and death.  The three books have been national bestsellers and movies have been made both in Sweden and the United States. In 2008 the books were the second bestsellers internationally.   Larsson never lived to see them a success.  Some people believe his death is the result of a crime. Ruth will review the books in terms of the influence of his life on the material in the books.  Is Michael Blomkvist, the male main character, based on Larsson’s life?  And, is Lisbeth Salander, the girl who…, based on a real life person?  She will also look at how politics, family, and the geography of Sweden influenced the author all of his life.  Ruth said, “I have been to Sweden and have walked the area of Stockholm where much of the story takes place.  I emailed a Swedish friend and asked specific questions as to how the Swedish people view Larsson and his books.  I will share her answers.”

Teen Tech Week 2011 is March 6-12! Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at teens, librarians, educators, parents, and other concerned adults that highlights nonprint resources at the library. The 2011 theme — Mix and Mash @ your library — focuses on encouraging teens to use library resources to express their creativity by developing their own unique online content and safely sharing it by using online collaborative tools.

The Washington County Public Library is offering a summer library program to the children of our community to encourage them to read for pleasure during the summer and to retain their reading skills.   This year’s theme is:

To add to the fun and to create a sense of challenge that will keep kids reading, we’d like to offer incentives in our “It Pays to Read” store and prizes drawn at the end of the summer. Because of our limited budget, we cannot afford to offer this without help.

We would LIKE to have a drawing for each of our branches this summer. Some kids that live in Washington County, just can’t make it to Chipley for a program. Any donation you care to make will be appreciated. A supply list will be distributed later for you collection.

Lucinda Says: I hope to see you all at our meeting March 3. I am looking forward to Ruth sharing her insights on the book series. Game night is coming up March 10. We will have tickets at the meeting for you to sell and we will also need sign ups for refreshments. Be recruiting friends now for a table of your favorite game with your favorite people, or plan to learn a new game and make new friends. Game night is a great fund raiser so lets promote it now. Lucinda
March is Women's History Month! Come see the display in the glass case on incredible and interesting women located in the foyer of the Chipley library.
The New York Times Bestseller table will continue by the circulation desk.

"I must say I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book.  Groucho Marx
