About our Organization

The purpose of the Friends organization is to provide support for the Washington County Public Library by providing materials and equipment, which would otherwise be unavailable, assisting the library staff in its programs, and making our citizens aware of the important role the public library plays in our community.

May Newsletter

Welcomes all Friends to their monthly meeting Thursday,
May 2nd, 2013, from 12:00-1:00pm, at the Blue Lake Community Center.
Everyone is encouraged to attend!

One year ago, I was standing in the Wal -Mart parking lot helping gather food for our local food pantry, and I mentioned to a good friend of mine that swimming in a pool had helped me with a knee problem.  But I was becoming bored with swimming laps in a pool.    With a smile on his face, he suggested I should take up scuba diving in the Gulf of Mexico.    I looked at him as if he were from a different planet and said, “You must be joking, I could never swim around on the bottom of the ocean.”   He was not joking and one thing lead to another until I found myself a year later doing what I thought was impossible.  Since that day, swimming has never been boring and even better; I have shed a few pounds.

I am Jerry May.   I have the marvelous privilege of serving as Pastor of the best church in the world, First United Methodist Church of Chipley. Sometimes known as the church on top of the hill where God’s love is made real.    My wife Judy and I are excited about the opportunity to share with you our journey into the mysterious underwater world and the lessons we learned while swimming with the sharks at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.  Look forward to seeing you on May 2nd!

Our next Friends of the Library luncheon meeting will be Thursday, May 2nd at the Blue Lake Community Center.  The meeting starts at noon.  The hostesses for the meeting are Roxanne Bush and Pat Dickson.  They usually open the Center around 11:00 A.M. to get the room ready for us.  Come early and visit if you like.

We welcome two new members who were at our last meeting.  They are Rhonda Dickinson, from the Vernon area, and Bonnie Walden, a cousin of Pat Dickson’s, who lives east of town.  That increases our actual count of Friends to 79.  I appreciate all of you – you make a difference!

The program for May 2 is Scuba Diving.  The Chipley Methodist minister, Reverend Jerry May and his wife, Judy are in charge of the program.  They will be sharing with us their experience as scuba divers and the benefits people gain from this activity.

We appreciate Cindy Mitchell who has been catering our meals since the February meeting.  We agreed that Cindy would cater through the May meeting and then we (Friends and Cindy) would evaluate how it is going.  I will talk with Cindy before the Board meeting to get her input; I would also like for you to talk to the Board members before April 25th so that we can make a decision about whether we continue or not.

After the May meeting, we will help the WCPL personnel with the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the library.  The committee, Catherine Nelson, Melanie Doss, Renae Rountree, and Barbara Russell will let us know how we can help.  We signed up to help with the food at the April luncheon meeting.

We have a break from the May meeting until September 5.  Let’s not forget to visit the library during the summer months and help in anyway we can.
We do love the library and staff!

Make your reservations for lunch by calling Ruth McCrary at 638-1442 or 638-6407 by noon on Monday, April 29th, 2013. Ruth has an answering service so if she’s not there you can leave a message.  If you need to talk to her about something, leave that message and she will call you.
The cost of the meal is $7.50.
Be ready to let her know which sandwich and drink you would like. A menu is on the right hand side of this newsletter.
The meal is being catered by Cindy Mitchell, and includes a choice of chips or pasta salad, pickle, diet or regular coke and something sweet – like a cookie.

The Chipley Branch of the Washington County Public Library will be closed starting at 2:30pm on Tuesday, April 30th, until Monday, May 6th, for staff to attend the Florida Library Association Annual Conference  in Orlando. Each year, library staff from public, academic, and special libraries gather together to learn new technology and discuss how to better serve the needs of their patrons around the state. Branches of the Washington County Public Library will be open during the staff training event. If you need library services, feel free to use any one of the member libraries in the cooperative.

Visit the Chipley Library, starting May 20th,
to see the artistic talent of Chestnut Hill Art Studio students displayed in the foyer.
Mrs. Winona VanLandingham, art teacher, is graciously allowing us to display the work of her talented students.
