May Newsletter

and
Friends
of the Washington County Public Library

Welcomes Chipley High School FFA Parliamentary Team!

The Friends of the Washington County Public Library will meet for a regular meeting on Thursday, May 1, at 12:00 p.m. at the East Room of the Ag Center, located on Highway 90. The program is being given by the Chipley High School’s FFA Parliamentary Procedure and the Prepared Public Speaking teams.  Accompanying the group is FFA advisor and agriculture teacher, Michele Curts.
Last year,  the Parliamentary Procedure Team made it to State and they have been working hard to get back and do better this year. They did not make the final round last year; but this year they have hopes of making  the top 4 and possibly winning their first state title.
The Parliamentary Procedure Team consists of Katie Register, Carol Boswell, Jessie Massey, Alena Blevins, Elizabeth Fleener, and James Clark.
Also competing at State this year is Mikaela Davis. She is in the category of Prepared Public Speaker. This is her first time competing; but she won sub-district and district meets to be able to compete at State. Her speech is, “The Evolution of Farming in the past 40 Years.”  She has written her own speeches and has used her family and other sources as background material.   The Florida FFA State Convention is June 30-July 4th. Friends, we well get a preview of what they will do at the convention. Parents and those interested from the community are  invited to join us for lunch. You can eat with us, bring your own meal, or just attend. If you choose to eat lunch with us, or just have come to hear the program, call Joyce Odom at 638-1736 on Monday, April 28th, before noon. This will allow us to set up enough chairs for everyone. Thank you for your interest in Friends.

It has been an incredible year for the Friends of the Washington County Public Library and you all deserve a wonderful summer. Many of you have stepped up to the challenge of taking on new projects and roles to ensure that the Friends stays active. In July of this year, I will have been director for one year. Sometimes it seems like it just happened and other times I feel like I have been working forever. But I never   imagined the role that the Friends would play in my life. Your support and encouragement has been a blessing. There have been times when your "good job" has revitalized my  commitment to the Library. So today, I tell you,      "Good Job" and thank you from the bottom of my heart!

In the Ag Center.
Welcome Josh Roberts!

Joshua C. Roberts was born in Dothan, Alabama, and raised in Chipley, Florida. In May 2013, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

During the time waiting to report for active duty, Joshua worked at Sanborn Western Camps, in Florissant, Colorado. He was fortunate to be a summer camp counselor in an outdoor leadership program. The initiative was offered to young men and  women going into their junior year of high school.

Joshua will speak to the Friends on behalf of  Sanborn, and he will share his experiences while teaching and mentoring youth in the outdoors. Sanborn provides a wide variety of opportunities, such as horseback riding, archery, marksmanship, rock climbing, and photography. The camp offers  2 to 4 weeks programs for and girls, ages 9—16..

A primary focus of the camp is character development. Each age group is introduced to ingredients that foster this theme. These traits are termed GROW STRONG and constitute the foundational values necessary to strengthen life skills. In a month’s time, the shared experiences of outdoor practices and individual values will transform strangers into friends and friends into family.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and Bring a Friend!

Zedra is looking for Legos to start a
Lego Club for Kids!
 DONATE TODAY!

Why LEGO Club?
It’s supremely engaging for a variety of kids. Children who thrive on open-ended creativity also love LEGO Club because it allows them to experiment and create whatever they want. Another appeal of LEGO Club for kids is its open format. Conversation is encouraged during building time, and kids engage with their peers on all sorts of topics while their hands are busy constructing things.

When you consider the potential for engagement, peer interaction, and building an image of comfort and excitement at the library, LEGO Club is the ultimate bang for your buck.  Please gather what you can at yard sales, second-hand stores and of course  under foot!
