March Newsletter

Thursday, March 6, 2014 from
                                             12:00-1:00 p.m.
In the Ag Center.
Welcome Josh Roberts!

Joshua C. Roberts was born in Dothan, Alabama, and raised in Chipley, Florida. In May 2013, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

During the time waiting to report for active duty, Joshua worked at Sanborn Western Camps, in Florissant, Colorado. He was fortunate to be a summer camp counselor in an outdoor leadership program. The initiative was offered to young men and  women going into their junior year of high school.

Joshua will speak to the Friends on behalf of  Sanborn, and he will share his experiences while teaching and mentoring youth in the outdoors. Sanborn provides a wide variety of opportunities, such as horseback riding, archery, marksmanship, rock climbing, and photography. The camp offers  2 to 4 weeks programs for and girls, ages 9—16..

A primary focus of the camp is character development. Each age group is introduced to ingredients that foster this theme. These traits are termed GROW STRONG and constitute the foundational values necessary to strengthen life skills. In a month’s time, the shared experiences of outdoor practices and individual values will transform strangers into friends and friends into family.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and Bring a Friend!

Zedra is looking for Legos to start a
Lego Club for Kids!
 DONATE TODAY!

Why LEGO Club?
It’s supremely engaging for a variety of kids. Children who thrive on open-ended creativity also love LEGO Club because it allows them to experiment and create whatever they want. Another appeal of LEGO Club for kids is its open format. Conversation is encouraged during building time, and kids engage with their peers on all sorts of topics while their hands are busy constructing things.

When you consider the potential for engagement, peer interaction, and building an image of comfort and excitement at the library, LEGO Club is the ultimate bang for your buck.  Please gather what you can at yard sales, second-hand stores and of course  under foot!

Sunny Hills Branch

Sunny Hills Branch has many new fiction and non-fiction titles.  One of the new non-ficton books is Hot:  Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth.  Author, Mark Hertsgaard has written about globel warming and environmental issues for 20 years.  He's contributed to numerous National and International news organizations. This is a well researched, sobering, yet hopeful account of of what he's learned.

Wausau Branch

At Wausau Branch, new for Dystopia fans, Lissa Price's Starters is a stark page turner.  The world has become a place where the young rent their bodies to the old.  It is chilling, and leaves you craving the not yet released sequel.   Also of interest is Girl in a Blue Dress, by Gaynor Arnold.  This is a fictionalized account of Charles and Catherine Dickens' marriage. Names have been changed, but the research is accurate.  The book offers an intriguing look at the Victorian genius while the fiction allows the wife a much better outcome.

Greetings Friends!

Let me express to you how honored I feel to have the opportunity to serve as your president of Friends of the Library.  Thank you for your confidence in me.  Thank you, too, to all past officers and board members for the wonderful leadership you have provided this organization through the years.

The January meeting was most enjoyable as we heard many book reviews of our members' favorite books. I personally made a list of several books that I plan to read..  Thank you to our presenters.

The Board will meet Thursday, January 30th at 4:00 pm in the          Library.

We will be discussing possible plans for our annual Game Night as well as other possible projects to support our library. If you have any suggestions, please contact one of the Board members.  We welcome and solicit your input as we look for ways to enhance our libraries.

We need volunteers to host our meetings beginning with March.  I will have a sign up sheet available at our February meeting.

Also Joyce Odom has agreed to take our lunch orders.  Make sure you contact her by the Monday before our meeting on Thursday with your order.
I look forward to working with you as we all work together to further support our libraries.

Remember, we  welcome and invite your input.

Regards,
Pat Dickson

We are pleased to announce that the Sunny Hills Branch of the Washington County Public Library has been selected as a grant recipient of the Libri Foundation. The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new, quality, hardcover children's books to small, rural public libraries in the United States through its BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program. Since October 1990, the Foundation has donated over $5.8 million worth of new children's books to more than 3,300 libraries in all 50 states. The Libri Foundation works with the library's Friends of the Library or other local organizations because they believe in community involvement and want to encourage and reward local support of libraries. The Friends, or other local sponsors, can contribute from $200 to $350 which the Foundation matches on a 2-to-1 ratio. The Friends of Washington County Public Library raised $350 to help the Foundation's match resulting in 62 brand new books!
