Our special guest this month will be MICHAEL LISTER!

Author Michael Lister will be this month’s Friends featured guest. He said: “I will be speaking about my two recent novels, Blood Sacrifice and The Big Beyond.” Blood Sacrifice is the 5th book in my Chaplain John “Blood” series and just won a Florida Book Award.  The Big Beyond is the second book in my 1940s Panama City p.i. series featuring Jimmy ‘Soldier’ Riley, who first appeared in the 2011 bestseller The Big Goodbye.” Lister’s work has been described as “… hard-edged prose rank[ing] with the best of contemporary noir fiction: and is “…a seductive mix of sudden violence and raw emotion.”  The New York Times best-selling author, Michael Connelly, says that “[Lister] may be the author of the most unique series running in mystery fiction. It crackles with tension and authenticity.”
Come meet this accomplished author.

The Friends have been active for the last few weeks.  Merle Jones, chair of Game Night,  led us to a great night of fun and activity.  She was helped by Rosa Nell Baxley, who publicized the event, Susan Roberts who helped with set-up and games, Jane Potter who organized the food, Pat Dickson who secured the door prizes, and all those who set up the Ag Center who brought card tables, delicious food, games.

I sat down with Pat and Buddy Dickson and Fred and Amelia Buchanan who were playing Mexican Train Dominoes.  They were patient with me as I tried to learn the game.  However, I wore the “Bonnet of Shame” much longer than the others who were playing.  All-in-all, we donated $19 dollars to the Friends as a group.  Fred decided we would pay if we lost a round.

Lots of food was eaten.  We do have the best cooks!  Thanks to everyone who helped make the affair a success!  I have asked Lucinda to let everyone know how much we made and how much Friends has in the budget at this time.

We do need to finish the sign.  It looks nice but will look much better when we have the bricks around the bottom.  The County workers have been hard at it and we appreciate all of their work in getting the sign in place.

The Friends voted at the last luncheon meeting to prepare the food for the Library’s 10th year celebration, which will be held Friday, May 10th.  We’ll talk more about this as the time nears.

Leola Porter, Susan Roberts, and Lucinda Simonson are serving on a committee to select the 2012 Friend of the Year.  They will announce their selection at the next luncheon meeting in April.  Many, many people contribute to making Friends an active vital organization, which helps the libraries function more effectively.  I thank all of you!

Ruth L. McCrary
President, Friends of the Library

From the Treasurer:
Game Night was a great success. We made over $900.00 in ticket sales and received additional donations from Friends who could not attend.
Our membership drive was very successful. We currently have 67 paid members and anticipate a few more renewals from established members.
Thanks to the income from the book sale, Bridge-a-rama, memberships, Game Night and special donations. We have made the final payment for the new sign in front of the library and have a balance of $3,406.00.

Writers Group

Each month, a friendly bunch of writers, readers, and storytellers take it upon themselves to share a wealth of creativity.
Writers who need support for their work, either through writing peer critiques, workshops or classes, or just encouragement, may wish to attend.
Meetings are every third Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

Tai Chi for Health Class, 8 a.m., each Tuesday   @ Your Library in Chipley.
Classes are free and open to the public.
People of all ages find Tai Chi to be a gentle, effective way to recharge and relax. Whether you are in your first decade of life or your tenth, you will derive benefits from practicing Tai Chi.
The effects of Tai Chi are well studied, particularly in the population of people over 60 years old. The cardio-respiratory benefits of tai chi, revealed by studies in China, include improved resting blood pressure, improved oxygen capacity, and improved overall capacity of the cardiovascular system as demonstrated during exercise testing. Research also has demonstrated that Tai Chi practice improves strength, balance, and bone density.

Welcomes all Friends to their monthly meeting
Thursday, March 7th, 2013,
from 12:00-1:00pm,
at the Blue Lake Community Center.

Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Chipola College oral interpretation students and instructor Carol Saunders will be visiting friends of the Library on Thursday, March 7th.  Students will be performing humorous, dramatic, and inspirational selections of prose and poetry. Student dramatizations will feature works from a variety of authors, commentators, storytellers and political leaders.

March is National Craft Month! Check out one of our cool crocheting or quirky quilting books today to help you get started on your next project.

Two exciting things are happening on Thursday, March 7, 2013.  We are having our regular luncheon meeting with Carol Saunders bringing some of her students from Chipola to entertain us.  They are very talented and Carol does a great job with them.

And, of course, the second happening is Game Night, which is scheduled for 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. at the Ag Center.  Come play a game with us, or just  come and enjoy the fellowship with others!  It is a moneymaker for us and is usually the biggest moneymaker of the year.  Help it to be that! Merle Jones and her committee are doing a great job of organizing this event.  The food is always fabulous!

The rest of our sign has come in, and the County personnel have been good to help us with it.
The Friends thank the County, City and all of the library personnel who have helped up with this project.

We are also thankful that the Ag Center came forward with a place for us to meet last meeting.  Not only that, the personnel had the tables set up and the floors spic and span – ready for our use!  Say a big thank you to them when we see them.  And, I say a big thank you for all of the Friends help in making my job pleasant.

February Newsletter

Friends of the Washington County Public Library

Welcomes all Friends to their monthly meeting Thursday,
February 7th, 2013, from 12:00-1:00pm, at the Blue Lake Community Center.
Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Special Guest will be Nancy Springer!
Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession.
DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Nancy Springer moved with her family to Gettysburg, of Civil War fame, when she was thirteen.  She spent the next forty-six years in Pennsylvania, raising two children (Jonathan, now 38, and Nora, 34), writing, horseback riding, fishing, and birdwatching.  In 2007 she surprised her friends and herself by moving with her second husband to an isolated area of the Florida panhandle, where the birdwatching is spectacular and where, when fishing, she occasionally catches an alligator.

Fall in love with a good book this February!  Check out a romance novel designed to make your heart go pitter-patter.

We are sorry that Beth cannot cater for the Friends anymore; she did a wonderful job and made all of us feel special with her little “touches.”  The Friends will miss her and we wish her and her family the best.  All of us at the last luncheon meeting signed a card for her and I mailed it.
We do have a new caterer.  She is Cindy Mitchell from Bonifay and she came highly recommended.  Many of those present at our Thursday luncheon had used her services and felt she would do a good job for us.  We asked that she give us a list of four sandwiches from which we will choose.  She will also provide a choice of chips or pasta salad, pickle, diet or regular coke and something sweet – like a cookie.
The meal will cost us $7.50 each and we will pay the treasurer as we have done in the past.  For February, we will call Rosa Nell Baxley by noon on Monday of the week of the luncheon meeting for a reservation.

We thank Rosa Nell for her help with the reservations.  She has served us in this capacity for several years and has done a great job. Personally, I really appreciate her and I know the rest of you do, too.  She has asked, however, that we find someone else to do it, and if this is something you would like to do, let me know.
If you have any questions about the catering,  food, or any other topic, be sure to let me know.  We want to serve all of you in the best manner.
Thank you all for your contributions to Friends.

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Welcomes all Friends to their monthly meeting Thursday,

January 3rd, 2013, from 12:00-1:00pm, at the Blue Lake Community Center.

Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Since we aren’t having a Board meeting, our next meeting is for all members to attend. It is our regular luncheon meeting which will be held Thursday, January 3rd at 12 o’clock noon at the Blue Lake facility. Also, our dear Beth, who has prepared our lunches for several years has had a heart attack and is at home mending. I have tried to contact her to find out how she is doing but have not been able to. If any of you know how she is doing, please let me know.

At our January meeting it has been suggested that we bring a bag lunch and just eat together as we have been doing but just bring our own meal. We will continue with the meeting as we usually do with a business meeting and program. Remember, our program is put on by the members. This is one of my favorites as different members share a book they have read and one they found highly interesting. So, keep that in mind for the meeting.

If anyone has an item for the newsletter, contact Zedra and she will put it in the newsletter for you. I look forward to seeing each of you and hearing about a book you have read.

Due to unforeseen circumstances concerning Boar Deli, January’s Friends meeting will not be catered. Friends are encouraged to bring their own lunch for this meeting until such a time that other catering arrangements can be made.

This January, let the “Book Nook” help you make and keep some New Year’s resolutions. Check out one of our books on health, finance, or travel.

Let 2013 be the year of change for you!
