March Newsletter

Friends of the Library will have their meeting on Thursday, March 3rd from 12:00-1:00pm at the Blue Lake Community Center.

 Everyone is invited to attend!
Ruth McCrary, Friends member and educator, will review Swedish author, Steig Larsson’s trilogy, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.  She will give some interesting tidbits of his life and death.  The three books have been national bestsellers and movies have been made both in Sweden and the United States. In 2008 the books were the second bestsellers internationally.   Larsson never lived to see them a success.  Some people believe his death is the result of a crime. Ruth will review the books in terms of the influence of his life on the material in the books.  Is Michael Blomkvist, the male main character, based on Larsson’s life?  And, is Lisbeth Salander, the girl who…, based on a real life person?  She will also look at how politics, family, and the geography of Sweden influenced the author all of his life.  Ruth said, “I have been to Sweden and have walked the area of Stockholm where much of the story takes place.  I emailed a Swedish friend and asked specific questions as to how the Swedish people view Larsson and his books.  I will share her answers.”

Teen Tech Week 2011 is March 6-12! Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at teens, librarians, educators, parents, and other concerned adults that highlights nonprint resources at the library. The 2011 theme — Mix and Mash @ your library — focuses on encouraging teens to use library resources to express their creativity by developing their own unique online content and safely sharing it by using online collaborative tools.
