      Friends of the Washington County Public Library

at the Blue Lake Community Center.

Robert S. Davis was born June 1, 1943, and reared in Calhoun County, Florida. He received his high school education in the Calhoun County Public Schools System. His undergraduate work was at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, and University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1979.  He received his Master of Christian Education at Southern Christian College, in Blountstown and his Doctorate in Christian Education at Southern Christian College. Robert is a dedicated genealogist and historian (you can’t be good at one, without the other), specializing in that period of time between the War of Independence and the conclusion of the Florida Indian Wars. Doctor Davis, besides working on the sequel to Out of Savannah, is working on a book about Major David Moniac (pronounced Manack). Major Moniac was a Creek Indian and a graduate of West Point. He was killed in Action while leading his men in the Battle of Wahoo Swamp, in the Second Indian War.

President’s Newsletter Notes

Ruth’s Article

Members, let’s remember our Book Sale which is scheduled for Friday –hours 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. and Saturday, 9:00 A.M. until 12 noon.  If you haven’t signed up, you can call me at 638-1442 or 638-6407.  We have slots available at all times except 11:00-12:00 noon on Friday.  Two persons have already signed up for both of these times.   Thank you, members, for always volunteering to help in this worthy cause.

We are so sorry that Ricky Biggins is leaving us.  She has been such a good member and a great secretary for the Friends luncheon business meeting as well as the Board meeting.  We will truly miss her.  I hope she will give us her new address so we can keep in touch with her.  We do need a new secretary since she has left.  If you know of someone that you think would like to be secretary or who would take the job, let me know.  We need someone before the next meetings.  Just give me a call about that person or about yourself.

The Board and membership have approved a sign for the library and the purchase of it.  I am ready to give the information to Linda for her to begin the process of purchase.  Also, if any of you know a bricklayer who wouldn’t mind doing a small job and will work for pennies, let me know.  (Is there anyone out there like that?)  We need help for sure.

Lastly, thank you for your attendance at board meetings and the luncheon meeting.  Last time we had excellent attendance.  Remember, the board meets Thursday, September 27 at 4:00 P.M. at the library and the luncheon meeting is Thursday, October 4.  We start gathering at the luncheon meeting at 11:30 and begin eating at noon.

Thank you for you for your support and generosity. The Friends as well as the library staff make my tenure pleasurable.  You are a great group to work with.

Author Chuck Barrett will be sharing his new thriller, THE TOYMAKER, with FRIENDS at our September meeting. He grew up in Panama City, graduated from Auburn University and is a retired air traffic controller. He is a veteran commercial pilot and flight instructor.
THE TOYMAKER is a sequel to the Savannah Project. Both books feature Jake Pendleton and promise nonstop adventure.                                                    Barrett’s first writing experience was drafting labor agreements. He started writing fiction in 1998 in his spare time. His first novel, The Savannah Project, was released in March 2010. This thriller interweaves his aviation expertise, a long-held passion for writing and a keen sense of suspense. In 2011, The Savannah Project became an award-winning novel, winning awards in ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award, International Book Awards, and Reader View’s Reviewer’s Choice Awards. He resides in Northeast Florida with his wife, Debi.

President’s Newsletter Notes

We’ve all had a summer break from meetings, and I hope everyone has had an exciting and relaxing time.  If you are like me, you wonder where the time has gone.

 When we last met, we were discussing building a sign for the library and we have made some progress with that.  We had voted on a sign with letters that could be put up manually as that is what the library staff preferred.  Another preference by the planning committee and board was to use “like bricks” for columns around the sign and maybe for the base.  We will have a report on that at our next board and membership meetings.  Both board and membership must vote to approve whatever is done with a majority vote.  Hopefully, we will be in a position to make recommendations – that is my goal.

Money ? We’ll discuss that.  Did anyone get the same phone I received?  “Mrs. McCrary, you have been selected to receive a donation for your favorite charity.  We just need your email address and you must reply by August 25^th. “ Well, everyone knows my favorite concerns now are my church, library, and Vernon High School.  Do you think I will get enough to fund all of those projects?   Oh, well.  I’ve never had money fall from the sky. 

Looking forward to the rest of the year with great programs and ideas to help our wonderful library and staff!   

Tai Chi for Health Class 8 a.m. each Tuesday  @ Your Library in Chipley.

Classes are free and open to the public.

People of all ages find tai chi to be a gentle, effective way to recharge and relax. Whether you are in your first decade of life your tenth, you will derive benefits from practicing Tai Chi.

The effects of Tai Chi are well studied, particularly in the population of people over 60 years old. The cardio-respiratory benefits of tai chi revealed by studies in China include improved resting blood pressure, improved oxygen capacity, and improved overall capacity of the cardiovascular system as demonstrated during exercise testing. Research has also demonstrated that Tai Chi practice improves strength, balance, and bone density.

Each year the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs makes grants available to pay for artists to come to rural areas to perform. Washington County Public Library applied for and received a grant to have Donna Wissinger and Artz Out Loud come to Chipley.

On Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.

at the Blue Lake Community Center, they will stage a combination of their two most popular productions, “Legendary Florida” and “Southern Voices”. This program is sure to delight all ages. Tickets for this event will be available beginning August 27 at the Chipley Branch of the Washington County Public Library. Ruth’s President’s Message

This is our last newsletter before the summer break and I almost missed it. Thanks to Zedra who took my notes late and Gladys Stephens who let me use her computer in North Georgia, I made the deadline.

The sign committee composed of Pat Dickson, Euba Nall, John and Kathy Foster, Linda Norton, Ruth McCrary met Monday April 16 at the library. Jo Robinson-Floyd, committee member, was absent. David Pettis, City Permits Division, met with the committee and discussed requirements of the city, county, and Florida Department of Transportation. David and Dan Miner have helped us tremendously and we thank them very much! The committee will have a report for the board at their next meeting.

Remember our luncheon meeting on Thursday, May 3 at noon at the Blue Lake Recreational Center. Contact Rosa Nell Baxley to order a meal for the luncheon. Rosa Nell does a great job with this as she did with the recent publicity for Game Night!

I hope you all have a great summer and we'll get back together in September.

Ruth’s   President’s Message

The Game Night, held on March 15, was a great success. Leola Porter is the ultimate organizer and had things in superb order. Cynthia Johnson had all the food planned to a “T” and what a great variety of goodies we had. The food was pretty and good—ladies, you outdid yourselves. Kathryn Henders organized the card tables and the bridge items. We had games of bridge, hand over foot, Mexican train dominoes, canasta and others. Jane Potter collected and give out the door prizes. Linda Norton, Merle Jones, Angeline Miller and others helped keep the food tables supplied. Approximately 75 persons attended the event. This was a fundraiser for the Friends’ projects. Lucinda Simonson will give us a report at the next meeting on how well we did.

And, speaking of projects, we have mentioned a sign for the library. I have contacted a company out of Sarasota that we used when we obtained a sign for Vernon High School. I have a picture and a quote for a possible sign. Others of you are looking at prospective signs, also. At our next Board meeting and luncheon meeting, let’s discuss our funds, costs of signs, what we want in a sign and see what our options are.

We have approximately 77 Friends for the 2012 year. Congratulations. Cynthia and Lucinda on working diligently toward our membership growth. The new yearbooks should be available at the next Luncheon meeting on April 5. Let’s all come out and enjoy Kevin Russell and the program he has planned for us.

Celebrate National Library Week 2012 (April 8-14)! First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.  All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate. .

Celebrate National Library Week with us! Come into any Washington County Public Library location, April 9-13, for a free raffle ticket. Winners will be drawn daily at the Chipley location and weekly at the branches.

Money Smart Week was created in 2011 with a partnership between the American Library Association and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help promote financial literacy. Banking on the success of last year’s national event, Washington County Public Library has joined the cause to help people learn more about their finances. Our special guest speaker will be Suzanne Hawkins (aka B.S. Hawkins), who grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. Suzanne received a bachelor's degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La, and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Phoenix. Writing is a hobby that she enjoys greatly and it gives her a chance to relieve stress and tell a pretty good story. A Little Red Wine will introduce you to Miranda Sparks, a real estate broker in Wakulla County. Read on as she gets herself involved in a dark mystery surrounding the death of her friend’s husband. She is no super heroine by any measure but her good heart and determined nature help her reveal the truth.

               Ruth’s President’s Message

 What inspires you?  I asked that because recently I have been inspired by one of our Friends’ members.  Roberta Lampe brought a book by called, “Thunder Dog.”  This book tells the true story of a blind man, Hingson, and his dog, Roselle, who were caught up 1,463 stairs in the World Trade Center when one of the hijacked planes struck.  The book describes how Hingson and Roselle faced almost certain death, but how they managed to get to safety.  Hingson relates, “Roselle sat next to me as calm as ever.  She does not sense any danger in the flames, smoke, or anything else that is going on around us.  If she had sensed danger, she would have acted differently.  But she does not.  I choose to trust Roselle’s judgment and so I will not panic.  Roselle and I are a team.” The reader discovers what happens when small, intensely human moments rise up.   Being a member of Friends is wonderful because we share the experiences we enjoy or inspire us and make us feel better about ourselves and others.          Dates to remember:

From the Director: We have good news from Tallahassee. According to all the people in the know, State Aid to Librarys is in the budget for the House and Senate, with the same amount  budgeted as last year. There is no indication that the legislators will be visiting this issue and we are as confident as we can be that all is fine. If things change, we will be contacting you. But for now, there is no need for a letter writing campaign. Thank you for all your support in the past. If you should see your legislator, please thank that person for supporting the public library.  Linda

Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson has penned a poem in protest at planned library closures.The writer, who was named Children's Laureate and awarded the MBE last year, said she had used libraries since she was a child and still visited her local branch to research and write her best-selling books.Her poem, released on Friday to mark National Libraries Day, describes them as places to "meet your heroes, old and new, from William the Conqueror to Winnie the Pooh".The 62-year-old writer, who was born in London but lives in Glasgow, said she wanted to make a serious point in a fun way. She said: "It's just more interesting to put the reasons I love libraries in that form rather than write an earnest article about it. If we lose libraries, we would lose readers and we would become a less literate country."Campaigners say hundreds of libraries face closure, with some groups taking legal action in a bid to save them.

Her Library Poem reads: "Everyone is welcome to walk through the door. It really doesn't matter if you're rich or poor. There are books in boxes and books on shelves. They're free for you to borrow, so help yourselves."Come and meet your heroes, old and new, from William the Conqueror to Winnie the Pooh. You can look into the Mirror or read The Times, or bring along a toddler to chant some rhymes. "The librarian's a friend who loves to lend, so see if there's a book that she can recommend. Read that book, and if you're bitten, you can borrow all the other ones the author's written."Are you into battles or biography? Are you keen on gerbils or geography? Gardening or ghosts? Sharks or science fiction? There's something here for everyone, whatever your addiction."There are students revising, deep in concentration, and school kids doing projects, finding inspiration. Over in the corner there's a table with seating, so come along and join in the Book Club meeting. Yes, come to the library! Browse and borrow, and help make sure it'll still be here tomorrow."

Amelia Grey (aka Gloria Dale Skinner),

who grew up in a small town in the Florida Panhandle. She has been happily married to her high school sweetheart for over twenty-five years. She has lived in Alabama, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and now lives in Florida. 

Amelia has won the coveted Romantic Times award for Love and Laughter. She has also received the prestigious Maggie Award for best historical, and Affaire de Coeur's best American historical award. She has been a finalist for the Golden Heart and the Holt Medallion awards, which are given by Romance Writers of America and numerous other awards.   Her books have been sold to many countries in Europe, Russia, and China.

The Wausau Branch will be closed until the anticipated date of April 1, 2012. Wausau City Hall has received a grant and is being remodeled. Please share this information.

Ruth thanks Lucinda Simonson for her tenure as Friends President.  “She worked quietly and tirelessly for the Friends.  And, she continues to work as our new treasurer.”

The officers and board will hold their first meeting of the year on Thursday, January 26^th, at 4:00 P.M., in the Library Conference Room.  All officers and board members are encouraged to be present. 

Ruth says, “Let’s talk about some areas that we would like to work on for our public libraries.”
