Our special guest will be  

Amelia Grey (aka Gloria Dale Skinner),

who grew up in a small town in the Florida Panhandle. She has been happily married to her high school sweetheart for over twenty-five years. She has lived in Alabama, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and now lives in Florida. 

Amelia has won the coveted Romantic Times award for Love and Laughter. She has also received the prestigious Maggie Award for best historical, and Affaire de Coeur's best American historical award. She has been a finalist for the Golden Heart and the Holt Medallion awards, which are given by Romance Writers of America and numerous other awards.   Her books have been sold to many countries in Europe, Russia, and China.

The Wausau Branch will be closed until the anticipated date of April 1, 2012. Wausau City Hall has received a grant and is being remodeled. Please share this information.

Ruth thanks Lucinda Simonson for her tenure as Friends President.  “She worked quietly and tirelessly for the Friends.  And, she continues to work as our new treasurer.”

The officers and board will hold their first meeting of the year on Thursday, January 26^th, at 4:00 P.M., in the Library Conference Room.  All officers and board members are encouraged to be present.

Accessing eBooks from

Washington County Public Library

First Step: Where are the eBooks?

The first step to accessing eBooks through Washington County Public Library is to visit our website, http://www.wcplfl.com/  . Looking down at the lower right corner of the webpage, you will see a blue box that says “Now Available: eBooks, digital audiobooks, and more”. Clicking on this box will take you to the NEFLIN Overdrive website. This is where you can check out eBooks.

Second Step: What Software do I need?

The type of software you need depends entirely on what type of eReader you have.

Nook, Sony, Kobo, Pandigital or other devices: Downloading Adobe Digital Editions is essential to checking out eBooks on these devices. Adobe Digital Editions is a free software download that requires creation of a user name and password. This means that you MUST download the software to your personal computer. The software will recognize your computer and authorize according to your account. Once the software is downloaded, eBooks can be checked out and downloaded to your computer and then downloaded to your eReader. A link to the free software download is located on the NEFLIN Overdrive website on the left side of the page under the Getting Started box.

Kindle: Amazon Kindle works different from other devices. It does not require Adobe Digital Editions. Instead you access the NEFLIN Overdrive website, sign in and check out books for Kindle. After confirming checkout, you will click on the link Get for Kindle. This will reroute you to the Amazon.com website. On the right side of the page, there will be a small box that says Get Library Book. Click on this link and you will be asked to sign in with your Amazon username and password. The eBook is then downloaded to Amazon’s Cloud Drive. In order to get the book on your Kindle, simply turn on your device, hit the menu button, and select Sync and Check for Items. The book will download automatically. You MUST be using wireless internet or 3G to sync your items to the Kindle.

Third Step: How do I sign in to Overdrive to get eBooks?

After you have determined your software needs for eBooks, the next step is to sign in using your Washington County Public Library card. On the NEFLIN Overdrive website, there is a link in the red toolbar marked Sign In. Click on this link and it will take you to a page with a drop down menu that has four libraries. Select Washington County Public Library. (Don’t worry about the other libraries. They are participants because the eBooks are grant funded. You only need to be concerned with our library.) You will then be prompted to enter your Washington County Public Library card number. It will begin with a 1WCCO or 1WCC0. You MUST have a library card number that begins with these letters and numbers in order to sign in. Sign in is CASE SENSITIVE. All letters must be capitalized. There is no need to insert spaces between numbers though. Once you are signed in, you may browse for books. REMEMBER your access to Overdrive is tied to your library account. If you have physical overdue books or materials, you will be BLOCKED from checking out eBooks.

Fourth Step: What can I read?

Once you are signed in to Overdrive, you can browse for any number of eBooks. You can use the search box and look by author, title, or subject. You can narrow your search to only available copies as well. EBooks are exactly like physical books in one respect. If you check out a book at the library, someone else has to wait to check it out until it is returned. This applies to eBooks as well. We may have only one DIGITAL COPY of a particular eBook. This means that you must wait for someone to return the book before you check it out. When looking at a book, it will tell you if there are available copies of the book and how many copies the library owns. You may place a hold on a book if it is not available and you will be notified by email when it is turned back in. Another important thing to be looking for is format type. If you have a Kindle, you want to check out the Kindle book. If you have another device like a Nook, you want to check out the Adobe EPUB eBook. If you want to read the book on your computer, the Adobe PDF eBook is your best bet.

Fifth Step: I am about to drive over my eReader, I am so frustrated! Where can I get help?

The NEFLIN Overdrive website provides a variety of help options located on the left side of the main page. This includes the My Help application, the Guided Tour, Help/FAQs, and Compatible Devices. For more personal help, feel free to stop in at the Chipley library to talk to someone. Each member of the staff has an eReader and we are learning just like you. We may be able to explain something that is confusing you. Remember we are here to help you!

Washington County Public Library is excited to announce “Teen Read Week,” from October 16-22, with the addition of 25 new teen books!

The library was an award recipient of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Teens’ Top Ten Books Giveaway grant.  YALSA is a division of the American Library Association (ALA). 

Grant funding generously was provided by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.   

Visit the library and check out the best books for teens, selected by teens!  The King of the Jungle awaits your choice.

Michael Lister will be the speaker for our October meeting.  His book DOUBLE EXPOSURE, which takes place in the swamps of north Florida, is being filmed now.  He also has a new book out, THE BIG GOODBYE, with the setting of Panama City in the '40s.  All are welcome to attend our meetings and hear about Michael's latest projects.

The special guest this month is Debi Menacof, of “Outside The Lines Art Studio, located in Marianna, FL. Debi is originally from the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, but has lived in Florida for half her life. She lives in Marianna with her husband and seven-year-old son. Debi’s teaching experience has spanned over 25 years, from pre-school to adults over 90! Debi is an Art Educator of the Wiregrass Museum of Art.

This month, at the Friend meeting, a few of you will create a piece of art. You may think that you are not an artist but you will be surprised how the artist within can be brought out!

Lucinda Says: Congratulations to our 2010 Friend of the Year, Kathryn Henders. Congratulations to Angeline and Dick Miller on 60 years of marriage. Anyone interested in working on the book sale, which will be held in the fall, let me know. I need someone or a team to be in charge. It is not as scary as you may imagine. Board members remember that the April board meeting will be held April 28, at 1:00pm. We will get used to the new time.

I hope to see everyone at the May meeting. Jeanne Lavender has arranged something that I think will be fun.

May 2-8 is National Wildflower Week.

April has National Library Week from the 10th to the 16th!

WELCOME Dr. Anne B. Jones is the author of STOP, a manual for youth violence prevention, Gold Thunder, an autobiography of 1960 NASCAR Champion Rex White, All Around the Track, a collection of racing mini-memoirs, Brave at Heart, the story of Photographer Walter Victor & the Atlanta Braves, Tides of Fear, a thriller set on the Georgia coast and Tools for Successful Writing. She has just completed A Light on Peachtree: A History of the Atlanta Woman’s Club. STOP was published and released by the Atlanta Council on Battered Women, distributed nationwide, and included as part of the television documentary Behind Closed Doors, narrated by Monica Kaufman of Atlanta’s Channel 2 News Team. Brave at Heart was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year.
Dr. Jones specialized in working with at-risk students for thirty-one years, teaching in a variety of school settings, including Job Corp, Boys and Girls Town (a shelter for status offenders) and Dekalb Alternative School (an educational center for suspended students). She is a volunteer mediator and has been a rape crisis counselor, victim-witness assistant, volunteer probation officer, public relations writer, and member of the Gwinnett County Domestic Violence Task Force.
Dr. Jones has published over 500 feature articles on topics ranging from crime prevention to personality profiles and makes frequent presentations on writing and publishing topics at bookstores and writing workshops.

The Washington County Public Library is offering a summer library program to the children of our community to encourage them to read for pleasure during the summer and to retain their reading skills.   This year’s theme is:       

To add to the fun and to create a sense of challenge that will keep kids reading, we’d like to offer incentives in our “It Pays to Read” store and prizes drawn at the end of the summer. Because of our limited budget, we cannot afford to offer this without help.

Any donation you care to make will be appreciated. A supply list can be provided for your collection and donation.
